Ingredients
Scale
- 1/3 cup cilantro stems
- 1 1/2 teaspoon ginger
- 1 tablespoon garlic
- 8 ounces ground beef
- 1/2 teaspoon ground white pepper
- 1 tablespoon tapioca flour
- 1 stalk green onion
- 1 1/2 tablespoons oyster sauce
- 1/2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 egg
- Oil. Enough for deep frying.
Instructions
- Make the aromatic paste. Combine garlic, ginger, white pepper, and cilantro in a small mortar and pestle. Pound into a rough paste.
- Prepare the Filling. In a large bowl, combine the main ingredients for the filling. These are ground beef, chopped green onions, light soy sauce, salt, sugar, tapioca starch and egg. Mix until well combined.
- Assemble the Wontons. Please see the blog post on how to fold wontons.
- Cook the Wontons. Heat oil on high or medium-high heat. Wait until the oil is hot, then carefully drop in the wrapped wontons. Don't overcrowd the pan. Fry them for less than a few minutes or until golden brown.
- Let cool slightly. Remove them to a paper towel-lined plate and work on the next batch until the remaining wontons are cooked.
- Serve and Enjoy. Once cooked, serve the beef wontons hot with your favorite dipping sauce, or add them to soups and stews for added flavor and texture.
Notes
- If you don't have a mortar and pestle, chop the paste ingredients into fine pieces.
- Play around with different shapes of the wontons. Make a boat shape, a triangle, purse, flowers, options are endless on the internet!
- Make the wonton wrappers are sealed tightly to prevent the filling from leaking during cooking.
- Experiment with different dipping sauces to find your favorite flavor combination.
